Jewish Heritage Month at Louis Brier
At Louis Brier, we celebrate the culture and history of Jews and Judaism throughout the world! We are the working example of Judaism at its finest, maintaining the traditions and values which have sustained Am Yisrael for thousands of years. This month, we highlight that heritage with programs , music, and art which bring our Jewish mission to the fore: delivering long term care for the aged based on the life-sustaining principles of Judaism.
WHAT IS JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH?
In 2018, Parliament unanimously passed a bill proclaiming, that throughout Canada, the month of May will be marked as “Canadian Jewish Heritage Month”, celebrating the inspirational role that Jewish Canadians have played and continue to play in communities across the country. From law, to politics, to culture, to sports, this important initiative celebrates the contributions Jewish Canadians have been making to this country for 250 years.
R. Mordecai Kaplan z”l once described Judaism as a civilization, with a heritage beyond simply a religion. It is a people, a nation, who have thrived throughout the world bringing literature, art, music, food and customs into the tent of Judaism to create a better world. We hope to focus on some of the beautiful aspects of Judaism and Jewish culture throughout this month and perhaps reveal a bit more about the story of this civilization.
WHY IS JEWISH HERITAGE MONTH SIGNIFICANT?
This type of initiative helps Canadians understand one another by allowing different communities and cultures to be showcased and celebrated. Jewish Canadians have made enormous contributions to the fabric of Canadian society and regardless of their cultural background, all Canadians are rightly proud of the country we have built together. Understanding and appreciating the contribution different communities make to Canada brings us close together.
