Admissions

The Admission Process

Choosing a long-term care provider is a difficult decision. Our Social Workers can help by providing you with more information about long-term care in general and the services we can provide in particular.

When you apply for long-term care with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, you will be asked to choose a preferred facility. We encourage you to find out more about what we have to offer at Louis Brier Home & Hospital and to call us for a tour. In that way, you can determine if it is your preferred residence.

We are the only long-term care residence in Vancouver providing traditional Jewish celebrations and cultural activities, kosher food and professional care rooted in the values of Judaism.

Louis Brier Home & Hospital provides 24-hour nursing and personal care to all residents. The amount and type of daily care provided to residents differs based on the level of care needed:

  • Intermediate Care: Provides a private room, three kosher meals per day, snacks, 24-hour nursing coverage, as well as medication management and assistance with some personal care. Residents in Intermediate Care are still mobile and able to get to activities and the Dining Room for meals.

  • Extended Care: Provides a higher level of care with more nursing staff to assist residents. In addition to the support provided in Intermediate Care, residents in Extended Care also get help with all personal care, mobility and nutrition. Extended care has both private and semi-private rooms.

  • Special Care Unit: Our small 17-bed Special Care Unit is for those residents with advanced dementias who need a smaller, more intimate environment that provides safety and security for those who are no longer able to navigate a complex environment.

How to apply for residence

Application for all publicly funded complex care beds in Residential Care must be made through the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. Louis Brier Home & Hospital neither creates nor maintains a waitlist. If you are interested in applying for residency at Louis Brier, you must first call Central Intake of Vancouver Coastal Health at 604-263-7377. You will be assigned a Long-Term Care Case Manager from your local Community Health Centre (also known as Public Health Unit), who will assess your care needs.

Admission from hospital

The process for admission from hospital may be similar to that for individuals living in the community. When hospital staff deems the patient unable to safely care for him/herself post discharge and for the long term, the Transition Services Team (TST) will assess the patient as described above and waitlist him or her for the first available bed in the community.

Please note that Louis Brier Home & Hospital is unable to offer admission to anyone at any time without permission from Priority Access.

Please contact our Social Workers, Limor Shamy at 604-267-4744 or lshamy@louisbrier.com or Shania Sanghera at 604-267-5603 or ssanghera@louisbrier.com to learn more about the admission process or to schedule a tour.

Amenities

Dining

As a Louis Brier resident, you will enjoy three meals served daily in one of two dining rooms, as well as a variety of snacks and beverages. Our balanced and nutritious meals are prepared fresh in our kosher check-supervised kitchens in accordance with the laws of kashruth (Jewish dietary laws) and follow a six-week menu designed by a Registered Dietician.

Special meals are prepared for holidays, themed days and summer barbeques.

Dining at the Louis Brier Home & Hospital varies from area to area. Table service is provided in the Intermediate Care Dining Room, with a choice of earlier or later seating.

Extended Care has a dining room for residents who can manage a meal independently; a restorative dining room program for those who can eat independently, but need some guidance; and a bistro for those needing assistance from family and/or companions. Complete assistance can be provided at the nursing station by Louis Brier staff if needed. Dietitians assess each resident upon admission to Extended Care to determine their dining needs.

Accommodations

Our two-storey care building accommodates 91 residents on the second floor and 124 residents on our main floor, 17 of which are in our Special Care Unit. We strive to create the feel of home, as well as to foster a sense of community.

The main floor is a centre of activity and offers several communal areas, including a large lounge area with fireplace, piano, library and big screen television, a bright dining room, a marketplace, gardens and our administrative offices. Our synagogue is also located on the main floor.

The second floor includes the rehabilitation gym, an activity room and additional administrative offices. Each of these floors has nursing stations, a lounge area, a dining room and bathing rooms.

Resident Rooms

All our Intermediate Care rooms (the “Home” on the first floor) are private and include a private two-piece bathroom. Our Extended Care rooms (the “Hospital” on the second floor) are a mix of private and semi-private, each room with its own private two-piece bathroom. There are shower and bath facilities on each floor.

Furniture

The rooms come completely furnished with a bed, nightstand, chest of drawers and a closet. We encourage residents to decorate their bedrooms with their own familiar items, artwork, photos and other personal mementos to create a space that is uniquely their own.

Cable/Telephone

All rooms are equipped with connections for telephone and cable television. We have negotiated competitive plans with cable and telephone providers and we are happy to pass these cost savings down to you. Please inquire about these rates in our Business Office.

Support Services

We provide in-house housekeeping, laundry and maintenance services. Our residents can enjoy a clean, safe and harmonious environment without interruption or compromise.

Housekeeping

Our dedicated and hardworking housekeeping staff keep all parts of the facility clean, including our residents’ rooms.

Our Housekeeping Team provides daily cleaning, including garbage removal, bed-making, dusting, bathroom and floor cleaning. In collaboration with the Infection Control Team, the Housekeeping Department works to ensure the sanitation and environmental safety of Louis Brier Home & Hospital for everyone.

Laundry Services

We also provide laundry services to all residents unless otherwise arranged. Personal laundry is done weekly by staff at our on-site facilities. All clothes are labelled to be properly identified by the laundry service.

For residents or families who would like to do their own laundry onsite, there is a laundry room available on the first floor. This room is available daily from 8:00am to 4:00pm, Sunday to Friday, except high holidays. Residents and families may access the washer and dryer as needed.

Building Services and Facilities Maintenance

The Building Services Team plays an integral role in ensuring a safe and quality living environment for our residents by performing general, routine maintenance and servicing operations throughout the facility.

The team’s duties involve cleaning the facilities, managing general waste removal, taking care of any handyman tasks for residents, as well as overseeing outdoor maintenance.
