Smoke-free Policy

Dear residents, families, employees, companions, volunteers and visitors:

As a healthcare organization, we care about the well-being of residents, families and employees at the LBHH/WR. With that in mind, we are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment that is consistent with the City of Vancouver bylaws and Vancouver Coastal Health Policies, specifically, that of a smoke-free environment.

By continuing our current practice of allowing individuals to smoke on LBHH/WR property, we are not in compliance with the City of Vancouver and Vancouver Coastal Health’s Smoke-Free bylaws and policies so we must now align our current practice and policies with theirs. We believe that this alignment will allow LBHH/WR to continue to provide the highest quality of care in a smoke-free environment.

As smoking is a carcinogen in which there is no safe level of exposure adoption of this policy will ensure a smoke-free environment for those living, working, or visiting the LBHH/WR.
Please be advised that on March 1, 2020, the LBHH/WR will implement a Smoke-Free Policy whereby a smoke-free environment will be adopted which will prohibit all persons from smoking on LBHH/WR premises and property.

We know that this measure can present as challenging and may be very difficult for those wishing to smoke. We are here to help and support you during this transition.
Residents currently living at the LBHH/WR will be supported during a three (3) month transition period which can include a variety of support systems, including smoking cessation products, supportive individual counselling, support groups, as well as other alternative methods which can include relaxation techniques, meditation, etc. This transition period will end June 1st, 2020. All new residents will be informed of the Smoke-Free Policy at LBHH/WR prior to their admission and provided information as listed above, with the expectation that they will adhere to the policy that is in place.

If you would like more information about resources that are available to you, including; the Vancouver Coastal Health Smoke-Free Policy and City of Vancouver bylaws, please refer to these documents online that will explain in greater detail the existing policies and regulations. As well, we will provide information about support and other resources that are available online in the area of smoking cessation and emotional support. Pamphlets and other resource information will be made available to you in the lobby at LBHH and the WR.

If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me directly.

Kind Regards,
